How to build a business case for your refactoring

Biography

As a software craftsman I wonder around Europe to help and challenge people in they way they deal with code quality and good coding practices. As facilitator of coderetreats and legacycoderetreats I have the pleasure of working with a lot of different people across Europe that are passionate about creating clean and beautiful applications that bring value to their customers. These retreats are a perfect way to practice techniques and for me to experiment with different ways to help people learn about clean code and good code design.

Description

Are you suffering from technical debt headaches and see no way out? Do you have the feeling that investing in removing the debt could really improve your velocity, creativity and fun but you have difficulties convincing your product owner to let you do vital refactorings? When a business stakeholder wants your team to build something, they need to come up with a business case for that investment. Why should your team not do the same? Let’s explore and share some techniques to help you build a strong business case for your refactoring. We’ll look at setting priorities, getting return on investment and introducing the right metrics to measure the success of your business case. In the second part of this session you will be able to share your experiences in small groups and get inspired by each other’s stories. In the third part of this session, you will be able to build a first draft of your business case and know which metrics to set up to start collecting data to help you build and improve your case in the near future.
